Dorset & Jurassic Coast
Dorset Countryside & The Jurassic Coast
2019 dates: May 11th – 18th.
Gateway to the South West of Britain
Join our very own Trevor Toms, exploring the fabulous countryside and coastline of Dorset – home of the World Heritage Site, “The Jurassic Coast”.
Dorset is the English county where Thomas Hardy was born and lived, writing many famous novels such as “Far from the Madding Crowd”, “Tess of the d’Urbervilles”, “The Mayor of Casterbridge” and “Jude the Obscurer”. Hardy was a prolific writer and the stunning Dorset countryside influenced him greatly in his writing.
There is a strong Cornish connection – his novel “A Pair of Blue Eyes” was written in Boscastle, Cornwall – when he was an architectural draftsman, involved in the renovations of St Juliot’s church nearby. He fell in love with the Vicar’s daughter and that was when he became really interested in writing. See: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/boscastle/features/the-hardy-connection
But back to Dorset…
You will feel very safe in Trevor’s hands; it was he who accompanied me whilst trekking in The Himalayas last year and with whom I often ski in the French Alps. He is a strong walker with great common sense, which will work well on this holiday – although you won’t be going up over 4,000 meters on this particular tour!
Staying in the beautiful little hilltop town of Shaftesbury with Trevor and his charming wife Kate at their beautiful 17th century Georgian B&B http://www.fivebimport.co.uk/ or at nearby http://www.lafleurdelys.co.uk/index.htm, you will strike out each day with Trevor and literally walk through history – both human and geological. The accommodations are exceptional and your hosts are wonderful – you certainly won’t go hungry!
The Jurassic Coast clearly spans 185 million years of Earth’s geological history and the many unique features seen along this stretch are quite remarkable. The Geological epoch represented along this coast is The Mesozoic, sub divided into the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous Ages. From one of these ages was taken the influence for a famous film, it being one of great dinosaur habitats on Earth during The Jurassic. Fossils abound here. See the Wikipedia entry for The Jurassic Coast: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurassic_Coast
Shaftesbury is a pretty little market town, surrounded by beautiful unspoilt countryside. It is even possible to walk straight out of Trevor and Kate’s front door and do a magnificent walk along quiet country lanes and up onto the high chalk ridges, for which Dorset is so well known. There are a few of those huge figures carved in the steep chalk slopes, for which Dorset and Wiltshire are so well known, such as The Cerne Giant. Spectacularly sited Iron Age hill top settlements are a fairly common feature hereabouts.
